Manchester United’s hopes of signing Victor Osimhen this summer could be fading after David Ornstein hinted at where the Napoli star’s future lies.

Osimhen is believed to be among United’s top targets to strengthen up front, with the Nigerian open to making the move to Old Trafford even if Ruben Amorim’s side fail to secure Champions League football for next season.

Napoli will look to sell Osimhen this summer and have placed a price tag of €70 million on the Nigerian after his fruitful loan spell at Galatasaray, where he has scored 20 goals in 22 league games.

Although Napoli’s asking price could prove tough to match for United, the real stumbling block could be the 26-year-old’s salary, with Osimhen likely to demand wages in excess of €200,000-per-week.

Despite additional interest from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, the total financial package for Osimhen may prove too substantial for Premier League sides, with Ornstein telling the The Athletic that the striker could end up moving to the Saudi Pro League instead.

“There seems to be a consensus among PL clubs that [Osimhen’s] most likely destination is Saudi Arabia,” Ornstein wrote. “Part of that will be down to the affordability of his wages. But let’s see.”

United likely to eye cheaper alternatives to Osimhen

Osimhen would be United’s ideal target in their search for a goalscorer with pedigree and experience, particularly with the player keen to make the move to England.

However, United will be operating under tight constraints this summer while also looking to lower their wage bill and the club look to alternatives unless a significant financial concession is made by either Napoli or Osimhen.

Although players such as Hugo Ekitike, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are liked by United, those names may prove unrealistic for the Red Devils for various reasons.

Former Manchester City striker Liam Delap is likely to be a top target for United, particularly with an intriguing relegation release clause of £40m (€50m) in his contract at Ipswich.

Lille’s Jonathan David, who will become a free agent this summer, is also a target, although much will depend on the futures of Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Antony, all of whom will be available for transfer.
