Manchester United are exploring the possibility of re-signing David de Gea this summer, according to a blockbuster report.
The Red Devils are in the market for a new goalkeeper amid the uncertain future of Andre Onana, and De Gea has been identified as an alternative option to the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Senne Lammens and Emiliano Martinez.
That is according to a bombshell report from The Sun, who claim that Man Utd have made “hush-hush checks” about bringing De Gea back to Old Trafford before Transfer Deadline Day ends on 1 September.
De Gea left Man Utd upon the expiration of his contract in 2023 and he spent the entirety of the following campaign without a club before joining Fiorentina on a Bosman deal last summer.
The ex-Spain international made 42 appearances for the Serie A outfit last season, keeping 11 clean sheets, and he featured against Man Utd during a pre-season friendly on 9 August.
Man Utd to sign David de Gea?
Man Utd’s reported interest in De Gea comes after Ruben Amorim excluded the aforementioned Onana from his matchday squad to face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
The Cameroon international missed pre-season due to a hamstring injury, but he returned to full fitness ahead of Man Utd’s clash against Arsenal, and Amorim confirmed that his omission was purely a tactical choice.
“He [Onana] recovered, but the other guys [Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton] did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that,” Amorim told MUTV ahead of the game.
However, Onana’s replacement, Bayindir, was at fault for the only goal of the game, scored by Riccardo Calafiori, and Man Utd’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper is expected to ramp up ahead of Transfer Deadline Day.
