Manchester United are closing in on their most exciting transfer of the summer to date, with Ruben Amorim’s side said to be favourites to sign a world-class performer.
The Red Devils have already landed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to bolster the attack, but Amorim wants several more additions to strengthen a squad that finished in the lower half of the Premier League table last season.
Although goalkeeper had not been one of the areas that he was prioritising, the emergence of PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma on the transfer market has prompted the Red Devils to take advantage of a unique opportunity.
Man Utd’s interest in Donnarumma is not new. They were one of the teams interested in signing the Italian when he was in the midst of a contract dispute with AC Milan in 2021 but opted against a deal at that time.
Now they are considered to be the “favourites” to sign the Champions League winner, according to Corriere dello Sport.
PSG find Donnarumma replacement
Donnarumma’s future is uncertain at Parc des Princes, despite some sparkling high-profile performances for Luis Enrique’s side as they won the European Cup for the first time.
The 26-year-old’s contract expires in 2026 and so far no new deal has been agreed. It is claimed that PSG’s offers have left him cool. L’Equipe reports the Ligue 1 club wanting to given him a contract that is highly incentivised with bonus payments rather than guaranteed wages.
PSG have moved to sign promising young Frenchman Lucas Chevalier from Lille, sparking a surge of interest from Man Utd in Donnarumma. It is claimed that talks have taken place between the Italian’s entourage and the Old Trafford side in recent hours.
The Red Devils have had goalkeeping issues of their own in recent seasons. Andre Onana has failed to convince since taking over from David de Gea. Despite this, holes elsewhere in the Man Utd squad had left Amorim targeting other positions, with a central midfielder and a centre forward high on his priority list.
But Donnarumma’s changing situation has prompted Man Utd to take immediate action in a huge chance to their transfer plans.
