Manchester United continue to build Ruben Amorim’s squad for the 2025/26 season, with the club issuing a statement confirming that another contract has been signed.
Matheus Cunha has been added from Wolves in a deal worth €74 million while the expectation is that Bryan Mbeumo will join him at Old Trafford, although Brentford continue to wrangle with the Red Devils over a transfer fee.
Mbeumo is ready to sign a contract with Man Utd as personal terms are already agreed, but in the meantime, Amorim’s side have confirmed that a familiar face will remain at the club.
“The Academy graduate enters into a remarkable 20th season of his professional career having made his debut at Swindon Town, while on loan from United, in 2005.
“Heaton continues to play an important leadership role in the squad since returning to the club in 2021.”
Why is this an important deal for Man Utd?
Man Utd director of football Jason Wilcox has revealed the Red Devils’ thinking behind tying down the experienced third-choice keeper and the vital role he plays behind the scenes.
“Tom’s leadership and experience are really important for the group so we’re pleased that he will be part of the squad again next season,” he said.
“Tom’s mentality and excellent preparation to ensure that he is always ready to perform when called upon makes him the perfect complement to our goalkeeping group.”

Club legend Rio Ferdinand has previously spoken of the three-time capped England keeper in glowing terms.
“Tom Heaton is going to be a Scott Carson. In terms of value in the changing room, Pep Guardiola said: ‘Scott Carson is huge for them,’” Ferdinand told his Vibe With Five podcast back in November.
“Tom Heaton would probably fall into that category. He must be.”
Heaton joined Man Utd from Aston Villa on a free transfer in July 2021 but has barely featured for the first team since arriving at Old Trafford for what is his second spell at the club having come through the academy, playing only three games.
