Manchester City have announced the surprising signing of Marcus Bettinelli from Chelsea.

The Blues’ third-choice goalkeeper has joined the Cityzens on a one-year deal following the announcement that Scott Carson will leave Man City when his contract expires on June 30.

The Manchester giants needed a new backup and found it in Bettinelli, whose homegrown status and availability made him an affordable solution. Chelsea, with their host of goalkeeper options, didn’t stand in the 33-year-old’s way even though he still had a year to run on his contract.

Bettinelli has become Man City’s second signing of this special summer window after the club announced the arrival of Rayan Ait-Nouri in a €43 million deal on Monday.

Man City are also expected to complete the signings of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for up to €70m and Rayan Cherki from Lyon for up to €42m before today’s Club World Cup deadline.

Man City sign Bettinelli

“It’s an honour to sign for City,” Bettinelli said after his unveiling by Man City. “I have admired from afar what this Club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now I am excited to be a part of building on that success.

“I can’t wait to work with Guardiola, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close. Hopefully I can contribute in training, the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to win more silverware over the next year.”

Sporting director Hugo Viana added: “We’re really pleased that we’ll be adding Marcus to our squad this summer. He’s been in the Premier League for a long time and will bolster what is already a strong goalkeeping unit.

“His experience and mentality will hopefully complement our other senior goalkeepers while ensuring he’s always ready to perform when called upon himself.”
