Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has slammed ‘nonsense’ claims that his team gave up during their 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils were outplayed by their rivals in the first half, with goals from Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino giving the hosts a 3-0 lead at the break.

United improved after the interval and pulled two goals back through Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, but Liverpool held on for the win.

Rashford, who scored United’s second goal, has now taken to social media to hit back at claims that his team gave up during the game.

“Nonsense,” he wrote on Twitter. “We fought until the end and never gave up. We will learn and come back stronger.”

The England international also threw his support behind Bruno Fernandes, who was criticised for his performance against Liverpool.

“Bruno is a leader and a winner,” Rashford said. “He will be the first to take responsibility and the first to put it right.”

Rashford’s comments come after United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Fernandes following the game.

“Bruno is a top, top player,” Solskjaer said. “He’s been fantastic for us and he’s a leader in the dressing room. He’s a winner and he’s disappointed, of course, but he’ll come back stronger.”

The defeat to Liverpool was United’s first in the Premier League this season and leaves them in second place in the table, two points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

United will be looking to bounce back when they take on West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Rashford’s comments show that the team are determined to put the defeat to Liverpool behind them and focus on the task ahead.

The 22-year-old has been in excellent form this season, scoring 11 goals in all competitions, and he will be looking to add to his tally against West Brom.

United will be hoping that Rashford’s words will inspire the team to get back to winning ways and keep their title challenge on track.
