Martin Zubimendi’s transfer from Real Sociedad to Arsenal has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

FootballTransfers revealed in January that almost everything was tied up regarding Arsenal’s move for the Spain star, with just a few minor details left to clarify.

While there was a brief period when it seemed that Real Madrid might swoop in and steal the Euro 2024 winner from Mikel Arteta’s side, FootballTransfers confirmed the deal was still on track.

Zubimendi’s move to North London is now imminent.

Romano writes on X: “Arsenal will pay slightly more than €60m release clause as part of the pact with Real Sociedad for Martin Zubimendi deal.

“The fee will be a bit higher, but allowing payment in instalments as clubs share an excellent relationship.

“Here we go, confirmed.”

Why are Arsenal paying above his release fee?

Arsenal have decided to pay more than Zubimendi’s release fee because it will make it easier for them to manage their finances.

In order to trigger the release fee for the Spain star, the Gunners would have been forced to fund an upfront payment in full for the player. Having agreed to pay slightly more for the player, it means that they can space these payments out in instalments, making such a big move easier on their finances.

Zubimendi is not Partey’s replacement

The news that Zubimendi is heading to Arsenal coincides with reports that talks over a new contract for midfielder Thomas Partey have stalled.

Romano had reported earlier on Thursday: “Negotiations between Arsenal and Thomas Partey over new deal are not advancing.

“No agreement so far and now concrete chances to part ways in the upcoming days.

“Thomas would be available as free agent.”

The two deals, though, are not necessarily related. FootballTransfers understands that Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume has emerged as a leading target for Arsenal to replace the veteran Ghana international.
