Female UFC fighter breaks down during weigh-in

UFC women’s bantamweight fighter Ailin Perez was visibly shaking on her way to the scale as she weighed in for her UFC Paris showdown against newcomer Daria Zheleznyakova on Friday.

Perez underwent a brutal weight cut to make 135lbs for Saturday’s event and the effects were glaring when she took the scale.

The Argentine slowly walked toward the scale and struggled to lift her feet up to the platform. Once settled, Perez exhaled, eyes low to the floor.

Unfortunately, despite the concerning weight cut, Perez weighed in at 136.5 lbs, half a pound over the limit.

Nonetheless, she used the last bit of energy she had to flex her biceps and point up as she accepted her weight miss.

The weight-cutting process has been one of the frowned-upon practices in MMA. Fighters often starve themselves and drain all liquids from their body to meet the weight limit about 36 hours before taking the Octagon.

Perez’s body was likely reacting to being drained of all the nutrition and sweating out the remaining fluids.

Furthermore, the mental strain that weight-cutting puts on the athletes adds to the dread of the experience.

Fighters are usually given an hour to shed remaining pounds upon missing, during which they hop in a sauna to sweat off the pounds. Perez did not bother to cut more to avoid the risk of damaging her organs.

Perez showed up in much better conditions hours later at the ceremonial weigh-ins. She enters the fight with a 10-2 record including four knockouts, and behind three straight wins.

Zheleznyakova is making her second UFC appearance and looks to string her third straight win. The Russian fighter holds a 9-1 record with five knockouts.
