Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu in a cut-price deal this summer.

The Magpies are said to be plotting a £15million move for the 21-year-old centre-back, who has impressed in his debut season in the Premier League.

Salisu joined the Saints from Real Valladolid last summer and has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, helping Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side to a mid-table finish.

The Ghana international has been a regular in the Saints’ starting line-up since the turn of the year and has caught the eye with his composed performances at the back.

And according to reports, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is keen to bring Salisu to St James’ Park this summer as he looks to bolster his defensive options.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of centre-backs in recent weeks, including Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Brighton’s Ben White.

But it appears that Howe is now keen to make a move for Salisu, who is said to be available for a cut-price fee due to his contract situation at Southampton.

The 21-year-old’s current deal at St Mary’s expires in 2022 and the Saints are said to be willing to let him leave for a fee of around £15million.

That could prove to be a bargain for Newcastle, who are in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of defenders in recent weeks, but Salisu could be the perfect fit for Howe’s side.

The 21-year-old is a composed and reliable defender, who is comfortable on the ball and is capable of playing out from the back.

He is also a strong tackler and is good in the air, which could make him a valuable addition to the Newcastle defence.

Salisu has been a regular in the Southampton side this season and has shown that he is more than capable of playing at the highest level.

At just 21, he still has plenty of potential and could be a great signing for Newcastle if they can get a deal done.

The Magpies are said to be keen to get a deal done for Salisu this summer and it remains to be seen if they can get a deal over the line.
