Bill Belichick cements position as UNC head coach after scares over immediate NFL return

Bill Belichick has himself firmly planted in Chapel Hill, North Carolina as his contract to be the Tar Heels’ next head football coach received all the necessary signatures on Thursday. 

North Carolina officially sent out a partially redacted version of Belichick’s contract on Thursday, with the 73-year-old putting pen to paper with all the terms of his next football contract himself on Wednesday.  

The Tar Heels’ leadership from the university and athletic department signed off on the new contract on Thursday. 

Belichick was announced as North Carolina’s next head football coach, with the school moving forward with his public introduction after he agreed in principle to the details.

All the small quirks that brings the eight-time Super Bowl champion to college football have now become binding with his signature.  

There had been interest in Belichick going back to the professional ranks with Tom Brady involved in the Las Vegas Raiders search, as a minority owner, for their next leader.

Belichick has a $10million buyout in his UNC contract to leave of his own accord before June 1. After that date, it drops to a measly $1million for an NFL franchise. 

Everyone in Belichick’s camp has maintained since he took the North Carolina job that he would not leave the school for an NFL opportunity. 

Some skeptics still will not be convinced as the Raiders, Jaguars, Saints, and Cowboys still have vacancies at head coach.   

Belichick received interest last year from the Atlanta Falcons to become their head coach before the team ultimately went with Raheem Morris.
