Concussion expert Chris Nowinski believes Patrick Mahomes avoided any significant head trauma when he took an early hit from Jalen Carter in the Super Bowl.
Mahomes endured one of the worst nights of his career as the Kansas City Chiefs lost 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, throwing two interceptions and getting sacked six times.
But fans were concerned over whether the 29-year-old was struggling after his head crashed into the turf after a challenge from Jalen Carter in his team’s first drive of the game.
Viral footage caught the attention of Nowinski – one of the NFL’s ardent critics when it comes to head trauma – and he gave his verdict.
‘This is getting a lot of traction,’ Nowinski said, sharing the clip himself.
‘While a whiplash motion or (possible) head to ground impact can causeĀ concussion, Mahomes didn’t appear to show any specific concussion signs at any point and I don’t think he had one.’

Mahomes himself was not asked about if he had any concerns over his condition after the loss but took responsibility for how the game turned out.
‘They played better than us from start to finish,’ Mahomes said. ‘We didn’t start how we wanted to.Ā
‘The turnovers hurt. I take all the blame for that. Those turnovers swing the moment of the game and they capitalized on them.Ā
‘They scored on one and got a touchdown immediately after another. That’s 14 points I gave them. It’s hard to come back from that in the Super Bowl. I didn’t play to my standard and I have to be better next time.’
Mahomes also addressed fans on X, writing after the game: ‘Appreciate all the love and support from Chiefs Kingdom.
‘I let yāall down today. Iāll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back.’Ā
