Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has admitted he wants another go as a head coach in the NFL.
Spagnuolo is extremely highly regarded in Kansas City and has played a central role in the team’s run to two straight Super Bowl titles.
But now, speaking as the Chiefs finalize their preparations ahead of the playoffs, Spagnuolo dropped a hint that he sees his future away from the organization.
Asked if he would ever want a shot as a head coach, he said: ‘I’ll deal with that later.Â
‘The answer is yes but right now, it’s all about Denver (Chiefs play the Broncos on Sunday). I’ll let all of that take care of itself.”
Spagnuolo’s comments will no doubt put plenty of team on alert, coming at a time when several NFL vacancies are expected to be available in the offseason.
But there is minimal chance there is an opening at Kansas City. Last year, head coach Andy Reid, 66, ended rumors of a retirement by signing a new five-year deal to stay.Â
Spagnuolo coach the St. Louis Rams from 2009 until 2011 but they endured a nightmare 1-15 season in his first year. The second saw improvement, rising to 7-9 but the third and final year ended with a 2-14 record before he was fired.Â
He also served as interim head coach for the New York Giants in 2017, ending with a 1-3 record.
The Chiefs are expected to rest multiple key players ahead of the game in Denver on Sunday as attention sharpens on the playoffs. Patrick Mahomes is definitely out and Travis Kelce is also expected to be absent.Â
