Lions fan who tweaked Super Bowl tattoo suffers more heartbreak after latest playoff exit

A Detroit Lions fan who got a tattoo predicting they would win the Super Bowl in 2024 has been left devastated once again after tweaking the design ahead of this season.

Alex Chepeska, 44, sparked controversy when he unveiled the bold tattoo before last year’s NFC Championship game, which saw the Lions take on the San Francisco 49ers for a place in their first ever Super Bowl.

The design initially showed Detroit’s logo emblazoned across the front of the Vince Lombardi Trophy with ‘Champs 2024’ written underneath.

Yet after being told that he risked jinxing them against the Niners, in the end those warnings proved justified when the Lions blew a 17-point lead and crashed out of the playoffs.

Fortunately Chepeska had a plan. With Dan Campbell’s men still one of the leading contenders to make it to the Super Bowl the following season, the solution was a simple one: cross out 2024 and write 2025 below it.

His alteration to the tat looked a potential masterstroke when the Lions stormed into the playoffs as Super Bowl favorites after going 15-2 in the regular season and clinching the NFC’s top seed.

However, unfortunately for Chepeska the curse of his Super Bowl ink lived on when the Washington Commanders sent them packing in the Divisional round.

Rookie Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels broke Detroit hearts at Ford Field earlier this month, meaning their wait for a first ever appearance in the NFL showpiece goes on.

‘Look, I’ve loved the Lions my whole life, as much as you be a fan with the decades of ineptitude and the worst organization in the history of sports,’ Chepeska told People in January 2024.

‘My dad used to say, “Don’t get too attached to these guys. They’ll break your heart over and over.” And they constantly did.

‘Every season I’d get back on the bandwagon, get excited about them again again, and then would want to tear my hair out.’

He then said confidently: ‘But that’s the old Lions. They’re dead. This is the brand new Lions!’
