New Orleans Saints could make a stunning move to hire Mike McCarthy as their new head coach.
The Saints are the last team left with a head coaching vacancy and are taking their time to make sure they get the best man for the job.
And they are now set to interview McCarthy, who was fired by the Dallas Cowboys after failing to make the playoffs.
Tom Pelissero said on NFL Network on Sunday: ‘Mike McCarthy, I am told, is expected to interview with the Saints probably around the middle of this week.
‘He has got a lot of familiarity with that organization and GM Mickey Loomis was the offensive coordinator there a couple of decades ago.
‘He also has a lot success in his past, 12 playoff appearances in 18 seasons. Potentially a really good fit for a Saints team that is very much built to win right now.’

McCarthy is not the only contender for the vacancy though, with Pelissero also confirming the Saints plan to speak to Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore again.

At present, though, Moore and the Eagles are preparing for Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders, with a place in the Super Bowl on the line.
‘They are allowed under the rules to speak with Moore, win or lose for the Eagles today, but the result of the game could impact the timing,’ he said.
‘The Saints ideally want to speak to Moore as soon as possible, they could head to Philadelphia and speak with him on Monday.’
The Saints finished the season last in the NFC South with a 5-12 record. They hold the ninth pick in the 2025 Draft.
McCarthy and the Cowboys struggled this season partly due to quarterback Dak Prescott suffering a season-ending hamstring issue in Week 9 against Atlanta Falcons.
They were 3-6 when that happened and ended the campaign on a 7-10 record.
Since McCarthy and the Cowboys parted ways, fans in Dallas have been outraged by owner Jerry Jones hiring Brian Schottenheimer to replace him.
Darren Rizzi, interim head coach for the Saints this season, is also under consideration
Schottenheimer steps up from OC to take sole charge of the team on a four-year contract.
The Saints, meanwhile, fired coach Dennis Allen in November after they lost to the Carolina Panthers.
Darren Rizzi stepped up as interim head coach from is role as special teams coordinator and is also under consideration to take the role permanently.
