American Thanksgiving is Thursday and for Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston, there’s one traditional side dish that he absolutely cannot stand to eat.
Winston appeared on the Big Play podcast and was asked about his plans for Turkey Day, with Cleveland not playing until Sunday.
‘It’s not much that I really avoid on Thanksgiving Day,’ Winston said before seemingly changing tone and pleading with people to stop bringing one side dish.
‘I have this thing where… like please don’t bring mashed potatoes to Thanksgiving,’ Winston said.
When one of the hosts remarked about how mashed potatoes are considered a staple of the holiday, Winston disagreed.
‘I really don’t believe it’s a staple, like it’s mashed potatoes. Like the scalloped potatoes, cheesy potatoes I get that. But just regular mashed potatoes…’

The host then brought up the addition of gravy to the dish, to which Winston replied, ‘Gravy is like for the dressing or the stuffing, you know what I’m saying? You don’t need gravy for mashed potatoes… I’d rather just have a baked potato.’
While Winston’s food takes may be controversial, his promotion to the starting job has not been as the Browns have improved remarkably ever since Deshaun Watson went down with a season-ending injury.
In his first game as a starter, Winston knocked off the rival Baltimore Ravens 29-24 behind three touchdown passes – including one with less than a minute to go to win the game.
He then slumped against the Los Angeles Chargers and the New Orleans Saints before claiming victory over another AFC North rival on Thursday Night Football last week.
Winston led the Browns through snowy conditions in Cleveland to upset the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-19.
While the chance to save the season has long come and gone for the 3-8 Browns, Winston has been serving up moral victories for Cleveland fans.
The Browns next play on Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.
