Stephen A. Smith insists the NFL GOAT debate is over after Kansas City was dethroned by the Philadelphia Eagles at the Super Bowl.

During Sunday’s game in New Orleans, Philadelphia’s outstanding defense put the clamps on Patrick Mahomes to derail the Chiefs’ three-peat aspirations.

The suffocating performance secured a 40-22 win for the Eagles and, to Smith, momentarily eliminated Mahomes’ from the all-time debate.

Speaking on First Take on Monday morning, Smith said the GOAT conversation is ‘officially over.’

‘I’m not saying there’s nothing he can do,’ Smith added. ‘We could look years down the road but we’re talking right now, in the moment.’

Smith had previously argued that a three-peat, despite being Mahomes’ fourth title, would help his case greatly in what was an ongoing debate against Brady’s seven rings.

However, Mahomes getting completely shut down on Sunday, and losing his only Super Bowl meeting with Brady, has tarnished his candidacy.

Mahomes holds a 3-2 Super Bowl record with three MVPs, 10 touchdown passes, and seven interceptions. On the other hand, Brady is 7-3 with five MVPs, 21 assists and six picks.

‘We gotta bring Joe Montana back into this conversation because of what we witnessed yesterday,’ Smith insisted. ‘Joe Montana [is] 4-0, 68 per cent completion, 11 touchdowns, not a single interception ever.’

‘He’s also a three-time Super Bowl MVP,’ he added. ‘After this Super Bowl, it’s one thing to be talking about Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. We talk about, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Joe Montana.’

Smith also emphasized how Mahomes’ two title game losses were blowouts. In 2021, the Chiefs were on the receiving end of an embarrassing 9-31 loss to Brady’s Buccaneers.

‘Both of them, an annihilation,’ Smith noted. ‘[Tampa Bay] had Patrick Mahomes running for his life. We actually took track statistics for Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl against Tampa Bay because he had to run that much.

‘Yesterday, it wasn’t even about that,’ he added. ‘It was about four dudes on the Philadelphia Eagles defense that bum-rushed him. And the brother looked demoralized and hopeless inside of five minutes – it was that damn bad.’

Smith then noted how Mahomes dug his grave deeper by throwing a pick-six and another interception and ‘essentially gave them 14 points.’

‘He’s phenomenal,’ Smith said of the Chiefs star. ‘He’s great. One game doesn’t make Patrick Mahomes – a three-time Super Bowl MVP – [bad].’

‘We know what that is. But in the end, you talk about that GOAT conversation, that went the hell out the window last night at Super Bowl LIX.’
