Update on Christian McCaffrey’s Achilles injury: 49ers star continues to battle with ongoing issue

San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey has reportedly been dealt another huge injury setback.

The running back has already been ruled out of next week’s Thursday game against the Seattle Seahawks because of his ongoing Achilles tendinitis, according to ESPN.

The reigning Offensive Player of the Year is eligible to return from injured reserve next week but it’s claimed he will not be activated by head coach Kyle Shanahan.

However, there is optimism he could return in the near future after his injury did not flare up after some practice on the field this week.

McCaffrey, 28, is currently suffering from bilateral Achilles tendinitis – meaning he is dealing with the issue in both of his legs, although the issue is said to be more prevalent on one side.

ESPN also say that if he can maintain his progress on the practice field, McCaffrey could return for their Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 20.

If he misses that game, the showdown with the Dallas Cowboys on October 27 is an option before the 49ers go on a bye week. They will then return against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 10.

The star running back recently hopped on a flight to Germany to undergo treatment for the problem, which has kept him out since Week 1 of the NFL season.

According to his father, former San Francisco wide receiver Ed, the injury comes from working too hard on the practice field.

‘Tendinitis is an over-training injury, meaning you’re training too hard or doing too much, and it turns into tendinitis,’ Ed said on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast.

‘If I would say that Christian has a weakness, it’s that he sometimes has to protect himself from himself, in terms of training too much and doing too much.’

Achilles tendinitis is described by the Mayo Clinic as ‘an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to the heel bone.’

Most cases can be treated with at-home care, while more serious cases can lead to Achilles ruptures that might require surgery.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team All-Pro, McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards last season.

He has four 1,000-yard rushing seasons and two 100-catch campaigns in 91 games for the Carolina Panthers and 49ers.
