A Premier League footballer has been questioned by police in relation to a third alleged sexual assault after a woman came forward with claims of assault in February of last year. The footballer had previously been accused of sexually assaulting two women in separate incidents in April and June of 2021. The footballer was taken to a police station to be questioned after the latest allegations were made against him.
The first alleged victim, a woman in her 20s, claimed she was raped during a holiday in the Mediterranean in June of last year. She fled the five-star resort she was staying in and returned home to the UK where she spoke to the police and showed photos of alleged bruises on her body. Following his initial arrest in July of last year, the footballer was re-arrested on suspicion of two more counts of rape from April and June of 2021. The June allegation was later dropped by police.
The footballer’s first arrest was the talk of dressing rooms across the UK, with other Premier League players reportedly stunned by the allegations. Despite the ongoing investigation, the footballer has not been suspended by his club and remains a first team player.
Scotland Yard has released a statement regarding the case, stating that a man was arrested on July 4th, 2022, on suspicion of raping a woman in her 20s in June of that year. While in custody, the footballer was also arrested on suspicion of two incidents of rape alleged to have occurred in April and June of 2021. The police have confirmed that no further action will be taken in relation to the alleged offence in June 2021 due to the relevant legislation not yet being in effect at the time the offence is said to have occurred. The complainant continues to be supported by officers.
