Wayne Rooney has revealed that he wants Manchester United to re-sign a player that Erik ten Hag allowed to depart on a free.

With United in 16th place in the Premier League following a woeful campaign it is clear that Ruben Amorim’s squad requires significant improvement.

United still have the chance to end the season with some silverware as they take on Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

If they were to prevail in that fixture then Amorim’s team would secure their place in the Champions League for next season.

However, if United are to take steps forward next campaign then major changes will have to be made.

United legend Rooney was asked which three players he would like the club to sign.

Rooney disclosed that he would like United to re-sign his former team-mate David de Gea.

The goalkeeper played for United between 2011 and 2023 and made 545 appearances for the club.

However, the Spaniard was allowed to depart after negotiations regarding a new contract broke down.

De Gea was without a club for over a year before eventually signing for Fiorentina but Rooney would like to see the 34-year-old return to Old Trafford.

Rooney told Amazon Prime: ‘I’d sign David de Gea back. I think Manchester United have missed him and I think he would do an amazing job.’

As Rooney alluded to, United have endured struggles in the goalkeeping department following de Gea’s departure, with Andre Onana often unable to live up to expectations.

Rooney also believes that striker Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, would provide United with extra firepower in attack.

He said: ‘The second I’d sign Osimhen as a number nine. He’s a good striker and possibly available.’

Rooney added that the third player he would sign is Marc Guehi, who captained the Crystal Palace side that won the FA Cup.

The England defender has attracted much interest and Rooney admitted that it would be difficult to sign him.

Rooney said: ‘The third one I’d sign, it would probably be difficult, but I’d try to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace. As a centre-back he’d have a really good impact.’
