School: Hendersonville

Sports: Girls tennis

Hendersonville girls’ tennis won its fifth straight team state championship this past weekend. What went right for the team this season?

For me, it all goes back to God. He blessed me with an amazing team. I mean, I couldn’t come to the school at a better time. I grew up with these girls, and we all went to the same coach. And he taught us everything we know. So getting to play together with girls that you’ve grown up with and that you love and enjoy spending time with just makes it fun to go out there and play tennis. Really wasn’t about winning or losing, but getting out there and playing the sport we love.

Where do you feel like the team has grown the most this season?

We’ve just gotten deeper. Our five and six are so strong, and they were last year, too, but these girls just came out wanting to win every match. Not wanting to drop a game. So I mean, we would get out there, and they would fight for hours. Just come out with a perfect score. So yeah, I think our five and six just really came through.

How did you get into tennis?

So Eliza (Perry) actually. My mom used to play, and she was doing a round-robin, and I came by the country club. And she was like, ‘You should play.’ So I did, and then I loved it.

What do you love the most about playing tennis?

The companionship you get with your doubles partner, and just the fact that it’s a gentleman sport, and you’re out there just wanting to play the game you love and respect the people you’re playing against.

As a senior, what lessons has playing tennis and high school sports taught you?

I think that you can do anything you set your mind to. And that even if you don’t think you can go out there and beat somebody, you can’t go out there with that mindset. You have to know that you’re capable of whatever you put your mind to.
