Sep. 30—After a 6-3 win against Freedom on Monday, the South Caldwell girls tennis team battled a tough Alexander Central squad, falling 9-0 on Wednesday.
South Caldwell head coach Richard McKercher said it was a tough match, but he is proud of his player’s efforts.
“It was a tough match against a good Alexander team,” McKercher said.
Alexander Central’s No. 1 seed, Adi Eckard, defeated South Caldwell’s No. 1 seed, freshman Isabelle Richard, 6-0, 7-5.
Sophomore Jenna Mason won 6-3, 6-3 against the Lady Spartan’s second-seeded Lila Acevedo.
In the No. 3 seed match, senior Alaina Peterson bested South Caldwell’s junior Sydni Woodward, 6-2, 6-1, while junior Ella Deal took the No. 4 seed contest with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against freshman Jocelyn Lopez.
Alexander Central’s fifth-seeded junior, Jaidyn Queen, stopped Lady Spartan sophomore Abigail Phillips, 6-4, 6-3.
Junior Kaleigh Queen won 6-1, 6-1, to defeat sixth-seeded freshman Lauren Yount for the Cougars.
The Cougars captured the No. 1 doubles match when Eckard and Mason outdueled Richards and Acevedo 8-3.
The No. 2 doubles match saw Peterson team up with Queen to beat Phillips and Lopez 8-0.
Alexander Central also won the No. 3 doubles match as Ella Deal teamed with Laney Mayberry to defeat Yount and Carsyn Futrell 8-3.
“Solid play by Lila Acevedo and Abigail Phillips, as well as a terrific mental-shift by an injured Isabelle Richard, who played a very close second set,” McKercher said.
The Lady Spartans will travel to Ashe County on Monday before returning to Lenoir to square off with Hibriten on Wednesday.
