Oct. 7—GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Bemidji High School girls tennis team is advancing three players through to the Section 8AA Individual Tournament finals.
The Lumberjacks competed in the Section 8AA North Individual Tournament this weekend in Grand Forks, N.D., with one singles player and one doubles team making the cut.
In singles, Liz Peterson finished fourth in the subsection. She defeated Detroit Lakes’ Natalie Carlson (6-1, 6-4) and Little Falls’ Claire Kimman (7-6 (5), 6-3), then lost to eventual subsection champion Marisa Rousu of Alexandria in the semifinals and Fergus Falls’ Ruby Ellison in the third-place match.
Bailey Rupp lost her opening-round singles match, a 6-1, 6-3 defeat at the hands of Brainerd’s Lacy Busch.
In doubles, Elena Peterson and Maddie Jensen lost in the championship match. After picking up wins over teams from Little Falls (6-2, 6-4) and Brainerd (6-3, 6-4), Bemidji’s top doubles pair lost 6-4, 6-3 to Brainerd’s Claire Erdal and Ericah Folden.
No. 2 pair Kendal Midboe and Sam Wood won their opening-round match 6-3, 6-2 against a team from Detroit Lakes, but lost 6-0, 6-1 to Erdal and Folden in the second round.
The Peterson sisters and Jensen will resume individual competition at the 8AA finals on Saturday, Oct. 14, back in Sartell.
