Serbian Newspaper Blames Wimbledon Crowd for Djokovic Booing Incident

A Serbian newspaper has ripped into ‘English idiots’ for creating ‘gruesome scenes’ on Wimbledon’s Centre Court towards Novak Djokovic in his win over Holger Rune.

Djokovic took aim at the crowd on Monday night following his 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 win over Rune, claiming they had been disrespecting him by booing throughout the match.

‘To all the fans that have had respect and stayed here tonight, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I appreciate it,’ he said in his on-court interview.

‘And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player – in this case me – have a goooooooood night.’

Now, a Serbian tabloid newspaper has hit out at British fans, before claiming that the ‘idiots’ are fuelling Djokovic for an eighth Wimbledon title.

‘It wouldn’t be strange at all if Stefan and Tara [Djokovic’s children] burst into tears at the gruesome scenes from ‘Center Court’ at Wimbledon,’ the editorial by newspaper Alo! read.

‘Although the whole situation is unbearably awful, there is at least one positive thing about it. Djokovic is again ‘hungry’ to win trophies, and the English who hate him are giving him food.

‘We have no doubt at all that from Monday, the famous Serbian stubbornness will work and that Novak will do his best to shut the mouths of his haters again.

In fact, what our legend needed for months happened – fuel, motivation and the desire to win.

‘So, English, thank you for making Djokovic what he is with your idiotic behaviour.’

There has been a great deal of debate as to what the Centre Court crowd were actually shouting, with many, including Rune, claiming they were shouting ‘Runnnnnnne’, which sounds similar to boos.

Djokovic’s  BBC interviewer Rishi Persad said on court: ‘I am hoping they were just commenting on Rune, and they were not disrespecting you.’

Djokovic – who has a track record of taking on crowds – was having none of that.

‘They were. They were [disrespecting me],’ he insisted.

‘I am not accepting it. No no no. I know they were cheering for Rune but that’s an excuse to also boo.

‘Listen, I have been on the tour for more than 20 years. I know all the tricks. I focus on the respectful people that pay for the ticket, and love tennis and appreciate the players.

‘I played in much more hostile environments, trust me – you guys can’t touch me.’
