Timo Werner scores first Premier League goal for SIX MONTHS as Chelsea put Southampton to the sword

TIMO WERNER bagged his first Premier League goals in SIX MONTHS as Chelsea ran riot against Southampton.

The Blues showed no sign of being affected by the sanctions placed on them as they ran out 6-0 winners at St Mary’s.

Germany international Werner ended his personal drought in the 21st minute, capitalising on a misplaced header from James Ward-Prowse before rounding Fraser Forster and tapping home.

And he was at it again five minutes after the restart – firing home from inside the 18-yard-box after Forster saved a tame effort from N’Golo Kante.

Werner’s haul for the match could’ve been even greater had he not hit the woodwork a staggering THREE times.

The German’s last league goal, coincidentally, came in the Blues’ shock 3-1 loss to Saints at Stamford Bridge last October.

Blues fans were both shocked and over the moon to see the 26-year-old back on the scoresheet and took to Twitter to express their thoughts.

One tweeted: “Even Werner scored.”

Another said: “You know you’re a finished club if Timo Werner scored 2 goals past you.”

And another said: “I don’t wanna sound ungrateful but Werner should have scored 5 goals. Hit the woodwork three times.”

One remarked: “Swear Werner only scores vs Southampton.”

Another said: “Genuinely happy for Timo Werner. I hope he’d get the confidence he needs and play more like this.”

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel was full of praise for Werner after the match, saying: “It was his position, the players around him, connection with Mason [Mount], Kai [Havertz and Kova [Matteo Kovacic].

“It was the half left position as the double striker and it was an opponent that we could find spaces.

“It was set out for him to deliver and not give up. He is still an important player of this club and this group, and he did deliver.”

He added: “He could have scored more. He had huge chances and a lot of chances.

“It was his favourite position against an opponent we knew we could find spaces in behind.”

Werner and his Chelsea team-mates will be back in action Wednesday night, travelling to the Bernabeu to take on Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
