Tottenham 1-0 Man United: Johnson’s Goal Ends Spurs’ 17-Year Trophy Drought

Tottenham ended their 17-year wait for a trophy with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final at San Mames.

An encounter lacking in quality was appropriately decided by Brennan Johnson’s scrappy effort, bundled into the net past Andre Onana in the 42nd minute with the help of Luke Shaw’s arm.

United, who offered little in the first half, were much improved after the break and came closest to an equaliser when Rasmus Hojlund’s header was acrobatically cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven.

The Red Devils gamble on Europa League glory to salvage a miserable campaign proved naïve, with the result in Bilbao consigning them to a season without European football of any kind.

Tottenham, meanwhile, and Ange Postecoglou especially, gain the bonus of a place in the Champions League but in truth, their supporters looked content with their first piece of silverware in almost two decades.
