The ex-Tottenham star is now expected to sign a three-year deal with the Belgian outfit once the last few details are finalised.

Antwerp issued the following statement: “Royal Antwerp FC, Al-Duhail SC and Toby Alderweireld have reached an oral agreement on the final transfer of the Red Devil to RAFC. He will soon be able to sign for the Bosuil for 3 seasons.

“The administrative process has started and will take a few more days. The goal is to be able to complete the transition as soon as possible and to schedule medical and physical tests.

“We hope to see Toby soon on the practice field, to introduce him officially and extensively afterwards.”

Alderweireld was born in Antwerp on March 2, 1989 but never played for his hometown club.

The centre-back moved to the Netherlands in 2004 to join Ajax’s academy and made his senior debut for the Amsterdam giants four years later.

The 33-year-old then moved to Atletico Madrid in 2013 and spent two years with the Rojiblancos, one of which saw him play on loan for Southampton.

Tottenham snatched the Belgium international in 2015 and he quickly established himself as a key figure as well as fan favourite at White Hart Lane.

Alderweireld was among the driving forces that led Spurs to the 2019 Champions League Final.

The Belgian amassed a total of nine goals and five assists in 235 appearances across all competitions with the North Londoners until his departure for Al-Duhail last year.
