Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped an important update on Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Sweden international striker Gyokeres finds himself at the heart of a controversial battle between his agent and the Lisbon club as the transfer market prepares to open properly for the summer.
FootballTransfers has revealed how Manchester United’s approach for the player has acted as a catalyst for Sporting to go back on a gentleman’s agreement with the striker and push his asking price higher.
Reports in Portugal revealed that the Portuguese champions could even hold out for the full €100 million figure in his release clause as the transfer chase turns ugly.
It has been claimed that this attitude has seen Man Utd drop out of the race for the forward, yet Romano says that the Red Devils are doggedly hanging on in the race to sign the 27-year-old along with Arsenal.
“Manchester United keep calling for Viktor Gyokeres, but don’t forget Arsenal, because Arsenal remain in active contact. For Gyokeres, new contacts are taking place. He remains a strong option for Arsenal and a case to watch for the next weeks,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel.

What will happen with Gyokeres?
While the reports coming from Portugal indicate that Arsenal are ahead in the race to sign Gyokeres, the position of the former Coventry City striker is not necessarily secure.
FootballTransfers has exclusively revealed that a breakthrough has been made in Arsenal’s attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. While there is still some way to go before any concrete move is completed for the Slovenia international, the Emirates club are making headway here and could complete this transfer in preference to Gyokeres.
If this is the case, the door could be opened for Gyokeres to move to Man Utd – but the Red Devils will need to convince the striker to complete a remarkable U-turn in his thinking for that to happen.
