Wake held for Freddy Rincon as thousands pay their respects to Colombia and Real Madrid legend after his sad death

FREDDY RINCON’S emotional wake attracted thousands of mourners after the former Real Madrid ace’s tragic death.

Rincon died in hospital at the age of 55 three days after a horrific car crash with a bus, which required a three-hour operation in the Colombian city of Cali.

The Colombian legend suffered severe head injuries and had been in “critical” condition in intensive care until his death just before midnight last night local time.

The former midfielder’s wake was held at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali by his family and was flooded by relatives, friends and of course his fans.

Some of football’s most esteemed personalities attended, such as ex-Colombia manager Juan Carlos Osorio, former goalkeeper Rene Higuita and others

Rincon enjoyed such a successful career between 1986 and 2004 that he even got to captain the Colombian national team.

He played in three World Cups in the 90s and scored 17 goals in 84 caps.

The Colombian federation wrote: “The Colombian Football Federation deeply regrets the death of Freddy Eusebio Rincon Valencia, and sends a message of support and encouragement to his family, friends and relatives at this difficult time.”

Rincon also played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, such as Palmeiras, Corinthians, Santos, Napoli and of course Real.

The Colombian joined Los Blancos from Palmeiras in 1995 and spent two years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real released the following statement: “Real Madrid CF, its Chairman and its Board of Directors deeply regret the death of Freddy Rincon, a Real Madrid player between 1995 and 1996.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences and its love and affection to all his relatives, teammates and coaches , their clubs and all their loved ones.”
