‘We have to be strong and united’ – Fred calls for end to Man Utd squad cliques under Ten Hag after disastrous season

FRED has said the Manchester United squad needs to rid itself of the cliques that undermined the club last season.

Internal strife was a problem throughout the campaign as Ole Solskjaer was sacked, Ralf Rangnick failed to stop the slide and the Red Devils finished with their worst Premier League points total ever.

The squad appeared divided and they were heavily criticised by fans and the media for a number of poor performances and for their charcater.

Brazilian midfielder Fred says it is time to unite if they want to get back to the top again.

Fred said: “I think we have to be united. All aspects of last season were difficult which is hard.

“This season with a new manager, with new rules already, we’ll look to unite and stick together as that’s how our team must be.

“We have to be strong and to be strong we have to be united. We hope we can be focussed and strong.”

Erik ten Hag is already working on uniting the team down to the finest details both on and off the pitch.

The Dutchman insists they all eat together and leave their phones behind when they sit down so they communicate.

The training has also been intense but it has gone down well with a squad desperate to put last season’s under-achievements behind them.

Fred said: “He’s a great coach, training is good, intense.

“We’re aiming to put what he says into our daily training.

“It’s really important for us to have a strong coach alongside us who has the last word.

“It gives us security and helps us a lot. He’s very detailed in his work, he has his own fine details. All the day to day details.

“I’m sure we’ll achieve great things. That’s what we’re working towards. I hope we meet our goals by the end of the season.

“Last season was really difficult for everyone. For some years now we haven’t won any trophies. Obviously something has to change to achieve success.

“I am sure the manager is aware of this and will do his best to help Manchester United return to the top, from where they should never have left.”

Fred’s form at United has had it’s ups and downs and the 29-year-old’s place in the team is in jeopardy if the club can sign the likes of Frenkie de Jong.

The 27-timed capped Brazilian also opened up on his midfield partnership with Scott McTominay.

“It’s been a great four years for me here. I’m going into my fifth season.

“It’s been really important for me, a club that has both embraced and helped me a lot. I hope to continue giving back in games.

“I have to do my job on the pitch. It’s been an excellent four years for me, I want to continue developing more every day and I still want to win a lot of trophies with United.”

“Scott’s a great player, he’s still young so can get even better. I can also improve every day, that’s what I work towards.

“I think all the players in our squad, not just me and Scott, all the midfield and attacking players should connect and work hard together to achieve success.”

Fred ended on repeating the message that a new United is coming: “Last season is behind us now. It was really bad, we weren’t good enough.

“We have to turn the page, we have a new manager with new objectives.”
