Liverpool fans have fumed on social media after Virgil van Dijk had a goal ruled out in the Carabao Cup final for offside.

In a back-and-forth clash at Wembley were both sides had chances to take the lead, Liverpool looked to have seized the initiative following a free-kick whipped in by Andy Robertson.

The Reds captain beat Ben Chilwell to the ball, firing his header past Djordje Petrovic before racing off in celebration.

However, a VAR check later revealed that Wataru Endo had been offside in the buildup, with officials ruling that he had blocked Levi Colwill.

The decision proved highly contentious on social media, with some Liverpool fans claiming they had been robbed of an opener.

Chelsea had their own chance to go in front ruled out in the first half after Raheem Sterling had appeared to give them the lead.

Sterling had the ball in the back of the net, but Nicolas Jackson was judged by VAR to have been fractionally offside in the buildup and the game remained goalless.
