Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney insists he doesn’t have much sympathy for Marcus Rashford and has questioned whether he needs to leave Old Trafford.
The England international has scored just six goals in 33 games across all competitions this season, after netting 30 last campaign.
Rooney is the club’s all-time leading scorer and believes Rashford could be the one to surpass his record.
However, he has questioned his future at the club, ahead of United’s clash with Everton this afternoon.
When asked if he has much sympathy for Rashford’s current struggles to find form, he said: ‘Not much to be honest.
‘He’s in a privileged position where he is playing for Man United. He is the one player that I believe can get my goal scoring record.
‘I hope he does but he needs to hit consistency. He is not having the best of seasons, needs to find some form and become a leader.’
Co-pundit Rio Ferdinand said that Rooney’s performances when he was at Old Trafford would be lifted on the back of his work ethic.
Rooney though questioned whether this was an attribute that Rashford possesses.
He said: ‘I don’t think he’s that type of player, a leader. His body language doesn’t sometimes look the best.
‘Players such as (Raphael) Varane and Bruno (Fernandes) should be getting that out of Marcus.’
Ferdinand added: ‘There is something that will make you tick, he is one of the most lethal players running off the ball and he has someone like Bruno who can make that pass.’
Rooney though said that it looks at times that Rashford wants to do ‘so much’ and questions whether he needs to move to another club.
He said: ‘It is important the people you have around you, it can get lonely. I hope he’s not in that position, you play for United and England so you will get scrutinised.
‘You have to get ready. He is a Manchester lad and I really hope that he gets back into form and has a long career here.
‘But maybe he needs to move to another club.’
Ferdinand concluded that he hopes the introduction of INEOS at Old Trafford could help in Rashford’s quest to become a one-club man.
