Fabrizio Romano says that Manchester United are ready to complete a “crucial” signing for the future, with manager Erik ten Hag poised to sign a new contract with the club.

Rumours that Ten Hag would be sacked following a disappointing season swirled around Old Trafford following a disappointing Premier League campaign, but success in the FA Cup worked to change the narrative around the former Ajax boss.

After a season review spanning more than two weeks, Man Utd ultimately decided to keep the Dutchman in post, and Romano says that he will be handed a new three-year deal on top of that.

“What I’m hearing tonight is that there is more than a 90% possibility to see Erik ten Hag extend his contract at Manchester United,” he explained on his YouTube channel.

“The length of the contract, which they are still discussing, should be another two years added to the year he already had on his deal, so it will run until 2027. It’s a three-year total contract for Ten Hag.

“This is the conversation they are having and it’s a positive one.

“Ten Hag, despite all the rumours over his future, respected Manchester United’s decision to have a long review and consider all their options. He will be involved in the planning for the future.

“A three-year deal is really concrete. The new deal is 90% confirmed. Both parties want to make it happen. Ten Hag will be happy to plan with that, to have a long-term vision at Man Utd.”

Man Utd want to ‘protect’ Ten Hag

Romano also outlined Man Utd’s desire to shield Ten Hag from criticism in the early weeks of the season should the Red Devils make a slow start to the 2024/25 season.

On why United are hanging the manager a new deal, he explained: “It will avoid media problems after the initial games. Man Utd want to protect the situation and want to protect the manager and this is why offering him a new deal is considered a really important part of the story.

“Ten Hag is staying, with an offer on the table from Manchester United.”
