Golf’s biggest team competition gets underway early — VERY early — Friday morning with Day 1 of the Ryder Cup.

The tournament pits 12 American golfers against 12 from Europe in a three-day contest at Marco Simone Golf Club near Rome, Italy. U.S. captain Zach Johnson and European captain Luke Donald will be in charge of setting the teams before each morning and afternoon session from Friday through Sunday. Members of the LIV Golf Tour were eligible for the U.S. team — letting Brooks Koepka take part for Team USA — but not the European team alongside Rory McIlroy and company.

There are three different parts to the Ryder Cup. The first two days will begin with four foursome matches followed by four four-ball matches, each featuring teams of two golfers. In foursome play, the teammates alternate shots, while in four-ball play, all golfers play each shot and the lowest score for the hole gets counted for each team. The final day will be 12 1-on-1 singles matches between the U.S. and European teams.
