Oct. 3—Lee County women’s tennis has taken some lumps this season, but the Lady Jackets have been competitive in most of their matches and put up at least one team point in each of their last four.

Last Thursday, Lee played host to the Richmond Raiders in a Sandhills Athletic Conference match, and the outcome played to the script, as Richmond scored a 6-3 victory by winning four of the six singles and two of the three doubles matches. The previous day, the Lady Jackets had lost to Chatham Central by the same score.

Against Richmond, Lee County scored two wins among the six singles matches, at the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds. Peyton Koneski defeated Madi Grimes 8-1, and Macie Witt downed Ella Scott 8-4, respectively. The Lady Jackets also prevailed at No. 2 doubles, with Brooklin Underwood and Koneski downing Jentry Denson and Grimes 8-6.

However, some of the other matches didn’t go the way Lee had hoped. At the top of the order, Richmond’s Neely Turner held off Allie Johnson 9-7, and Denson beat Underwood 8-4 at the No. 3 singles. The Lady Raiders won the other two singles matches decisively, with No. 2 Hanna Smith beating Grace Britton and No. 6 Colbie Covington beating Racheal Montgomery. Both of those matches were shutouts.

At No. 1 doubles, Turner/Smith beat Johnson/Britton 8-1, and at No. 2, Denson/Grimes defeated Witt/Montgomery 8-4.

The Chatham Central match was the same, with two singles wins and a doubles win for the Lady Jackets. In singles, Koneski beat Emma Townsend 8-5, and Montgomery downed Jazz Martin by the same score. Lee’s doubles win came at No. 2, where Underwood and Koneski beat Townsend and Hallie Webster 8-6.

The Lady Jackets traveled to Pinecrest on Monday and will visit Scotland today.
