Local golfers secure spots in regional tournament on Monday

Vero Beach’s boys golf team took second place at Monday’s District 8-3A championship on the Dunes Course at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach.

Coming in 11 strokes behind champion Viera, Vero Beach was led by junior Derek Pickerill’s round of four-over 76.

Pickerill shot a 1-under 35 on his front nine and came home in 41 strokes on his back nine and made two birdies on the round to finish in a tie for third individually.

Junior Parker Heaney and freshman Connor Sloss each shot a 6-over 77 to finish in a tie for fifth and senior Owen Dunham shot an 83 to finish in a tie for eighth for Vero Beach.

Martin County grabbed the final regional berth as a team with a third place finish led by senior Dylan de Windt shooting an 85 to finish in a tie for tenth.

Treasure Coast senior Matthew Peter earned a regional berth by shooting 83 to finish in a tie for eighth for the Titans.

The Region 2-3A championship will be held at The Legends at Orange Lake in Windemere on Oct. 30.

Down at the Champions Club At Summerfield at the District 13-1A championship, Lincoln Park Academy freshman Jaden Peterson carded a 3-under round of 69 to finish second overall and earn a berth to regionals.

Peterson made five birdies on the day against two bogeys and finished four strokes behind Benjamin’s Pavel Tsar, who led the Buccaneers to the team championship.

Morningside Academy finished third to grab the final regional berth as a team and the Eagles were led by freshman Jeremy Hsu’s round of 1-over 73.

Hsu made three birdies against two bogeys and a double bogey for Morningside, who got rounds of 78 from Tristan Rhodenizer and Nathan Crawford and a 79 from Bill Shih.

Regionals for qualifying players and team will take place at The Estates Course at PGA National on Oct. 30.
