The League Two club were swift to respond to a front page headline in a newspaper touting the star’s reported interest.

The headline read ‘Star wants world’s oldest footy club – Taylor Swift to buy Notts County!’

A statement attributed to Alex and Chris Reedtz saw the funny side of the reports linking the American singer-songwriter to a takeover bid.

‘As sorry as we are to disappoint the Swiftes in our fanbase, we’re going to have to shake this story off,’ the owners responded.

‘There’s certainly no bad blood between ourselves and Taylor but, at such an exciting time for us and the club, she surely couldn’t have believed in her wildest dreams that we would relinquish our control.

‘We’ll leave a blank space in tomorrow’s pre-match playlist for a track from her newly re-released 1989 album as a gesture of gratitude for her interest.’

Notts County poked further fun at the report on social media by imposing Taylor Swift’s head onto the body of one of the ownership duo holding the National League play-off trophy.

Fans embraced the club’s response, with one supporter mocking up a version of the club’s shirt with Taylor Swift’s logo, writing ‘What could have been’.
