Ange Postecoglou made it clear from the start. We can’t replace Harry Kane so there’s no point trying. Instead, mate, we’ll use different players to score goals in different ways. Step forward James Maddison and move forward Son Heung-min.

With the South Korea forward now used as a striker and Maddison, the creative force, in behind, Tottenham have found a new, thrilling, identity. They still, though, rely on two main men to make them tick.

Last season, Kane and Son combined for the majority of Tottenham’s goals. Son and Maddison now share the same load.

They’re still reliant on two main stars but the style is completely different. Postecoglou has transformed Tottenham from a side reliant on crosses, counter-attacks and lots of headers (see pitch map, right) to one that builds and bosses the ball.
