In an unfortunate continuation of his dip in form, Indian batter Shubman Gill was dismissed for a duck on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai. The promising batter fell prey to a delivery by Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud during the 8th over of India’s first innings, marking a disappointing start for the hosts.

Shubman Gill departs for a duck

Gill, facing Mahmud’s second delivery of the over, misjudged a 135.2 kph full-length ball down the leg side. Attempting to flick the ball away, he instead found an outside edge, and Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das completed a comfortable catch, leaving the Indian batter dejected. It was a soft dismissal, and Mahmud celebrated his second wicket of the innings in style.

This marks another setback for Gill, whose form has been under scrutiny following lackluster performances in the recent T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka. Fans hoped to see a turnaround in the Test series against Bangladesh, but Gill’s early departure continues the worrying trend of his recent struggles at the crease.

Hasan Mahmud dominates India in the first session

Bangladesh’s rising pace sensation, Mahmud, delivered a brilliant performance on the opening day of the first Test against India, taking all four key wickets in the morning session and putting the visitors in a commanding position. The 24-year-old pacer showcased his skill and precision, dismissing Indian captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli, Gill and Rishabh Pant in quick succession.

By the time lunch was called India reached a score of 97/4 in 26 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, looking to steady the innings, remained unbeaten on 37, with Bangladesh’s bowlers keeping the pressure on. Mahmud has been particularly impressive, taking three key wickets in the opening session.

With the dismissal of top-order players, India will rely heavily on Jaiswal to build a solid partnership with KL Rahul post-lunch and regain control of the Indian innings as the Test match progresses.
