IPL 2025: Hardik Pandya explains MI’s loss to GT amid Rohit Sharma’s flop show

Mumbai Indians (MI) endured a disappointing defeat against Gujarat Titans (GT) in their IPL 2025 clash on March 29, losing by 36 runs. This marked MI’s second consecutive loss, leaving them at the bottom of the points table. The match, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, saw MI fail to chase a challenging target of 197 runs set by GT.

Hardik Pandya criticizes MI’s performance

Captain Hardik Pandya did not mince words in his post-match presentation, openly criticizing the team’s lack of professionalism in the field and their failure with the bat. “We were not professionals in the field, we made basic errors, and that cost us 20-25 runs and in a T20 game, that is quite a lot,” Pandya said. MI dropped crucial catches, including one from Jos Buttler, and made several fielding mistakes that allowed GT to post an imposing total.

Pandya also expressed disappointment with the batting lineup, which crumbled under pressure during the chase. “At the moment, we all need to take responsibility,” he added. “It’s still early stages; batters have to come to the party.” His remarks highlighted the urgent need for improvement across all departments of the team.

Rohit Sharma’s struggle with the bat continues

Rohit Sharma’s poor form remained a major talking point after the match. The veteran opener managed just eight runs before being dismissed by Mohammed Siraj, further extending his lean patch in IPL 2025. Rohit has now accumulated only 133 runs against GT across six matches, averaging a mere 22.16 without scoring a fifty this season.

Critics have started questioning Rohit’s ability with the bat effectively this year, with former cricketers suggesting that his performance trajectory may be too steep to recover from.

“Look, I’m telling you, I don’t want to be tough, but I must be. For some players, you have to be. Look, it’s high time for Rohit Sharma to get back among the runs,” former India batter Manoj Tiwary said on a chat show for Cricbuzz. “The ability of a player like Rohit Sharma is not 400. Last season, he scored 400, he hit a century, that’s fine. But where is the 800-900 season? Rohit is just not able to have these types of seasons,” he added.

As one of MI’s most experienced players, Rohit’s struggles have added to the team’s woes and raised concerns about their batting depth.
