Tom Latham has been ruled out of the One Day International (ODI) series against Pakistan due to a fractured right hand sustained during a training session. This unexpected injury has led to significant changes in the New Zealand cricket squad, with Michael Bracewell stepping in as captain and a familiar face called up as Latham’s replacement. The series, which begins on March 29, 2025, in Napier, will see Mitch Hay take over wicketkeeping duties.
A blow to New Zealand’s leadership in ODIs
Latham’s injury occurred when he was struck on the hand by a delivery while practicing in the nets. X-rays confirmed the fracture, necessitating a cast and a recovery period of at least four weeks, which means he will miss all three ODIs against Pakistan. The absence of Latham is particularly impactful as he was set to lead the team in this crucial series, especially with regular captain Mitchell Santner participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
New Zealand’s coach, Gary Stead, expressed disappointment over Latham’s injury but emphasized the importance of flexibility within the squad. “We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons,” Stead stated in a media release. He also highlighted that this situation provides opportunities for other players to showcase their skills on an international platform.
Michael Bracewell takes the helm
Bracewell, who has recently captained New Zealand during a successful T20I series against Pakistan, will lead the team in the ODIs as well. Bracewell’s leadership experience is expected to guide the team through this challenging phase. In addition to Bracewell’s promotion, Henry Nicholls has been recalled to the squad after recovering from a calf strain that sidelined him for much of the season. Nicholls brings valuable experience with 78 ODI caps and recent good form, having scored five half-centuries in his last six domestic innings. His return is seen as a significant boost for the batting lineup.

Stead expressed enthusiasm about introducing Mariu into the team environment, stating, “It’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time” and welcoming back Nicholls adds depth and experience.
