Outrage goes viral as Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan caught assaulting fan seeking selfie

A shocking video has emerged showing Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketer and the current world No. 1 all-rounder in T20Is, in a disturbing altercation with a fan. The incident, which occurred on the sidelines of a Dhaka Premier League match, has sparked serious outrage among fans and the media alike.

Shakib Al Hasan grabs the selfie-seeking fan by his neck

Shakib, who has a storied career with 67 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 117 T20Is since debuting in 2006, is known not only for his exceptional cricketing skills but also for his fiery temperament. The star all-rounder, who plays for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, was preparing for a match against Prime Bank Cricket Club when he was approached by a fan seeking selfies. Shakib initially refused the request, which reportedly escalated when the fan persisted. The cricketer reacted by grabbing the fan by his neck, an act caught on video that quickly went viral.

Here’s the video:

The footage has led to a public uproar, with many condemning Shakib’s aggressive behaviour. Critics argue that regardless of the provocation, such physical responses are unacceptable, especially from a high-profile athlete regarded as a role model by many in Bangladesh and around the world.

This is not the first time Shakib’s actions off the field have drawn attention. He has previously been in the spotlight for contentious interactions, including a notable incident where he shouted at an umpire. These controversies have shadowed his otherwise illustrious career.

Following a disappointing ODI World Cup 2023 in India where he failed to lead Bangladesh to the knockouts, Shakib is now focusing on the domestic circuit. Meanwhile, his national team is engaged in a T20I series against Zimbabwe without him.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the management of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club have yet to release official statements regarding the incident. However, it is clear that Shakib’s latest controversy could have significant repercussions on his professional and public image.
