Luton Town have handed Andros Townsend a long-term contract.

The winger, 32, signed a short-term deal last summer which was due to expire this month.

‘Three months ago I thought my career was over,’ Townsend said.

‘So from going to begging around the world just for a trial to being offered a longer contract is a dream come true.’

After his exit from Everton, Townsend signed a three-month deal at Kenilworth Road, and despite not playing a competitive match since March 2022, he has impressed on the pitch, with 11 Premier League appearances, two assists and one goal, the winner in their home game against Newcastle just before Christmas.

After scoring the goal, Townsend paid tribute to club captain Tom Lockyer, a week after he collapsed on the pitch against Bournemouth.

The new contract means the 32-year-old Townsend will be at Luton for the ‘foreseeable future’.

Luton boss Rob Edwards said Townsend had shown ‘real humility and professionalism’ at the club, adding: ‘He’s shown the whole group what it means to be elite and a top-end pro.’

Last month, Townsend revealed the heart-warming reason that he has changed the name on the back of his shirt to read ‘Townsend Sr.’ after his time away from professional fixtures.
