Bayern Munich star Aleksandar Pavlovic will miss the European Championship after coming down with tonsillitis, with Germany forced to call on a replacement.

The defensive midfielder had earned what was perhaps a surprise call up to Julian Nagelsmann’s side having only won a single cap before, featuring against Ukraine nine days ago.

In fact, he had been named in Nagelsmann’s squad for a round of international friendlies back in March, only to be ruled out of action with tonsillitis.

With the German squad given the weekend off, Pavlovic did not return to the squad in Herzogenaurach, German outlet Bild reports.

He was also absent from training on Monday and Tuesday, the report continues, and as such is now ruled out of the competition.

Symptoms usually include a sore throat, problems swallowing, a high temperature, coughing, a headache, feeling and being sick, earache, and feeling tired.

The NHS website also states that although removing the tonsils surgically is very rare, it is usually only done for those who suffer from severe repeated bouts of tonsillitis.

With Pavlovic sidelined for the competition, Nagelsmann was quick to name his replacement, calling up former Liverpool star Emre Can.

The Borussia Dortmund captain has had a strong season guiding his side to the Champions League final, but failed to make the cut for his country’s final 26-player squad.

‘We want another number six in the squad and have therefore decided to nominate Emre Can,’ Nagelsmann said on Wednesday.

‘He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team.

‘We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and who knows how to deal with the pressure. He can well fulfil the profile that we need now.’

Can represented die Mannschaft at the 2016 and 2021 editions of the competition, and was part of the side that won the 2017 Confederations Cup.

Germany will get the ball rolling in their home Euros on Friday when they take on Scotland in the competition curtain-raiser, before clashes with Hungary on Wednesday June 19, and Switzerland on Sunday June 23.
