Can Burnley somehow pull off the greatest of escapes? They were written off as doomed earlier in the season but in this form, survival is not out of the question.

Certainly that was the way Johann Berg Gudmundsson was talking after Vincent Kompany’s resurgent side destroyed Sheffield United.

Iceland midfielder Gudmundsson, who scored the Clarets’ fourth at Bramall Lane, said: ‘We believe we can do something special. We have four cup finals left but in the dressing room we’re all in this together.

‘We know we’re in a difficult position but we have to believe that we can pick up points in every single game.’

Positivity drips from Kompany, whose influence is proving pivotal to Burnley’s run of one defeat in seven Premier League games.

‘He believes we can stay up,’ added Gudmundsson. ‘He said that from day one and still says it.’

Meanwhile, Blades boss Chris Wilder will swing the axe in the summer after this latest surrender on home soil.

Asked if he planned a major clearout, Wilder said: ‘We’ll try. Everyone realises the need for a rebuild.’
