Chris Sutton claims Man United do not deserve Champions League qualification due to inconsistency, predicting Erik ten Hag won’t last long-term

Chris Sutton has claimed Man United don’t deserve to qualify for the Champions League next season and revealed he expects Erik ten Hag to leave the club in the summer.

United have endured a chaotic campaign, with the Red Devils losing 11 of their 29 league games, while they also have a goal difference of zero.

Despite this, United remain in the running to finish in the top five – which should be enough to qualify for next season’s expanded Champions League – although they trail fifth place Tottenham by nine points.

Ten Hag’s side have endured several heavy defeats this season, but they’ve also put in some impressive displays, including their 4-3 FA Cup victory over Liverpool last month, which highlighted their inconsistency.

And former Premier League winner Sutton, speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Kicking Off podcast to co-host Dom King ahead of United’s league game against the Reds, felt the Red Devils would struggle this time around and also hit out at their campaign so far.

Sutton said Ten Hag’s inability to inspire his side over a run of games would ultimately cost him

‘I think Liverpool will win and win comfortably,’ he said. ‘They are by far the superior team.

‘You see them (United) at Brentford, (and you think) right here we go, a strong end to the season… but it was so insipid, so poor.

‘They can’t reel in Tottenham or Villa and in many respects they don’t deserve to.’

Sutton went onto add that the inconsistent nature of United’s season explains why the under-pressure Ten Hag will eventually be sacked.

He added: ‘They can’t keep producing in just the odd moment. That’s why it’s going to be the end for Ten Hag.

‘If he beats Liverpool well that will raise his stock. But I can’t see it.’

King echoed Sutton’s thoughts, hitting out at United’s lack of solidity, while he also backed the title-chasing Reds for victory on Sunday.

He said: ‘United don’t deserve to qualify for Europe! They flatter to deceive.

‘They haven’t at any stage suggested they are Man United and that they’re going to bloom into a good team.

‘There’s been a few flashes but everyone can run through them.

‘I know the FA Cup game was chaotic, wild west and United came out on top but I can’t see it being as frenzied this time around.’
