Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United bid for non-league star turned down as he aims to strengthen squad after League One play-off disappointment

Peterborough United have seen an initial bid for Altrincham top scorer Chris Conn-Clarke rejected.

Conn-Clarke is a man in demand this summer after finishing the season with 23 goals and 12 assists, as well as being selected in the National League Team of the Year.

Peterborough have shown a willingness to buy from non-league over the years and Mail Sport understands they are pushing to bring Conn-Clarke to London Road this summer.

The 22-year-old is not short of offers this summer, though, with interest from across Europe as well as in Scotland.

Conn-Clarke only joined Altrincham permanently last summer when Phil Parkinson picked him up for a club record deal from Fleetwood Town.

After losing out in the National League play-off semi-finals to Bromley this season, Parkinson could offer no guarantees to Altrincham fans that Conn-Clarke would be around next season.

‘I would love to reassure everyone that Chris will still be with us next season but, in all honesty, I can’t,’ he said.

‘When a player does what he has done, in terms of goals and assists, the bigger clubs are going to come calling, and it’s very difficult to stop that natural next step happening.

‘If he is still with us at the start of next season, I will have the biggest smile on my face you have ever seen. If not, I won’t exactly be amazed.’
