Dominic Calvert-Lewin admitted it was a ‘great feeling’ ending his 22-game streak without a goal as the Everton star scored to seal a 1-1 draw against Newcastle.

It’s been another interrupted season for the Toffees striker who has been hit by injuries and struggles in front of goal, but finally got his breakthrough at St James’ Park.

The 27-year-old ended his goal drought with a clinical finish from 12-yards after Paul Dummett hauled Ashley Young down to the ground in the box.

Martin Dubravka got a hand to Calvert-Lewin’s effort but was unable to deny the England-capped forward a fourth Premier League goal of the season.

A share of the league points in the north east moved Sean Dyche’s side six-points clear of the English top-flight’s relegation zone and Calvert-Lewin insisted Everton have always had ‘belief’ in avoiding the drop.

‘I felt good like any other penalty I’ve taken. I decided to take it as if I was on the training pitch.

‘It’s a great feeling, to go so long without doing it, it can play on your mind at times.

‘In the first half we were a little bit unlucky. We need to start putting the ball in the back of the net more regularly,’ he added.

‘The belief’s always been there, sometimes you need results to feed into that. We’ve never stopped believing and we’ve never stopped working.

‘Keep believing, keep behind us. Just stick with us,’ said Calvert-Lewin.

Tuesday’s goal was Calvert-Lewin’s first since Everton beat West Ham 1-0 at the end of October last year.

His clinical finish from 12-yards ended a 1,300-minute wait for a 65th Everton goal having first opened his account against Hull in 2017.
