Everton have signed Carlos Alcaraz on a loan deal from Flamengo for the rest of the season with an option to buy the midfielder at the end of the campaign.

The 22-year-old becomes David Moyes’ first signing since returning as manager last month.

The Argentine started this season with Southampton, coming off the bench on the opening day defeat by Newcastle but joined Brazilian club Flamengo later in August for a club-record £16million fee.

He has made a quick return to England, however, to join an Everton side who have won their last three Premier League matches.

‘I am very happy to join Everton, such a great club, with a very good fanbase,’ Alcaraz told evertontv.

‘I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to start training with my team-mates and see the fans at the stadium.

‘I am ready for any challenge with this beautiful club so that’s why I came and accepted the offer to keep fighting for my dreams. I want to tell the fans that whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my best, I will give everything I have to take Everton to the top, which is where they deserve to be.’

Alacaraz has already experienced the atmosphere at Goodison Park as played his first Premier League match against Everton when he made his debut for Southampton in January 2023.

An impressive spell at St Mary’s followed which earnt him a call-up to the Argentina squad and then a loan move to Juventus a year later where he made 12 appearances for the Turin club and won the Coppa Italia.

On his new signing, Everton boss Moyes said: ‘We’re happy Carlos has agreed to join us on loan until the end of the season.

‘We’ve been looking to add players to the squad to give us more depth, particularly after the recent injuries we’ve picked up.

‘Carlos has Premier League experience, he’s still young and we believe he can bring some energy to the team which will help us between now and the end of the season.”

Alcaraz could make his debut in Everton’s fourth-round home tie against Bournemouth on Saturday.
