Former Millwall boss Neil Harris in talks for sensational return as the club prepares to part ways with Joe Edwards after just 19 games

Former Millwall boss Neil Harris will return to the club to fill the vacant managerial role following the sacking of Joe Edwards – according to reports.

Millwall parted ways with Edwards after a dismal run of six defeats in seven matches saw the club drop to 21st place in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Harris, who is the club’s record goal scorer and spent four years as their manager between 2015 and 2019, has been touted as the no.1 candidate to replace Edwards.

Harris is expected to sign an 18th-month contract with Millwall and will be tasked with saving the Championship side from relegation, according to The Independent.

However, Millwall will need to agree a compensation package with Cambridge as Harris is currently working as the boss of the League One side.

Harris – who took charge of Cambridge in December – is expected to leave the club imminently and bring David Livermore in as his assistant.

Harris is regarded as a club hero at Millwall – having become their all-time leading goal scorer, scoring 138 times in 431 appearances for the Den.

The Lions are sitting one point above their London rivals QPR – meaning they are at risk of dropping down to League One for the first time since 2015.

Should the move go ahead as planned, Harris could be in the dugout for Saturday’s trip to automatic promotion-chasers Southampton.

Millwall will be looking to turn things around after suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat at home to relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Millwall believe Harris is the right man for the job and feel he could be the difference between relegation and survival.

The job would also see Harris reach an interesting milestone – managing in all three tiers of the EFL this season, having started the campaign at League Two Gillingham.
