Frank Lampard Discusses Hilarious ‘No But Seriously’ Memes and Admits to Struggling with Switching from Joking to Being Stern During Interviews

Frank Lampard has claimed that he ‘can’t help’ switching between joking and being serious during interviews, as the Chelsea legend speaks out on hilarious ‘no but seriously’ memes.

The 45-year-old has previously gone viral for his post-match interviews, with the former Derby, Everton and Chelsea manager often being seen laughing before quickly cutting to a more stern look.

Lampard has subsequently become the subject of a series of online memes and opened up on his expressions on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

He also featured as an easter egg in the video game Football Manager 2023, with players able to select a response during a press conference that will see them answer a question positively, before stating ‘no but seriously’ and adding a more stern answer.

Speaking on the podcast, Lampard was quizzed by Jamie Carragher on whether he knew he was aware that he was making the funny expressions.

‘Can I ask you one thing?’ the former Liverpool defender said: ‘You must be aware when you’re managing and when you do your interviews and you do that thing where you’re laughing and then you go serious?’

Lampard: ‘Yeah, I’ve seen. My Daughter sent it to me loads.’

The pair were sat around a breakfast table alongside Jill Scott, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ian wright, who were all in hysterics. Wright added: ‘I love it!’

But it appears Neville had not seen the hilarious memes before, with the ex-Man United defender appearing to say to Carragher: ‘What?’

Carragher responded: ‘Have you never heard of that?’ But Neville said: ‘No?’

‘You’re going to go looking for it now!’ Lampard replied.

‘Do you know when you’re doing it? Or are you thinking about it?’ Carragher asked the former Chelsea player, who replied: ‘Nah I’ve tried to stop it now.

He pulled a serious face before saying: ‘No I have! My daughter sent it to me ages ago. It was a meme, or whatever they call it. But now I’ve seen it I can’t unsee it. But I’ve done a few press conferences where I’ve done it and then you think “oh s*** I’ve just done that.”

‘You know what I mean, I can’t help it!’

Back in 2023 Lampard was re-appointed as the Chelsea’s caretaker manager and, according to The Daily Star, had reportedly pulled out his iconic expression less than one hour into his return.

‘I’m very thankful for the ones [the fans] that are delighted [with his re-appointment],’ he said, smiling, during his first press conference back at the club. His demeanour then took a slightly different turn, saying: ‘If there are some that are not delighted, they can know that I will work my utmost [to succeed].’

The Athletic’s Adam Hurrey highlighted his hilarious expressions back in 2014, posting a fantastic thread showcasing many of Lampard’s joke-to-serious expressions.

Speaking on the expressions, Hurrey wrote on X (formerly Twitter) back in 2014: ‘Lampard is absurdly consistent. Even his interviews are always the same: Serious point, light-hearted point [chuckle] but, no, serious point.’
